Each year we commit to reading God’s word together. No matter where we are in the year, you can start your journey with us!
You can’t have a close relationship with someone you never talk to. It’s impossible. God’s word – the Bible – is the primary way He speaks to us. And it’s the absolute best way to discover how to follow Jesus on a daily basis. If you want to know more about God and His promises, reading the Bible is your next step.
There are many methods of Bible study to seek and understand, and it’s important to find methods that seek truth and application in Scripture and that works for you. A method we often use at HCC is called SOAP, and stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. You can do these four things in prayer, in a journal, out loud, with a small group, with a spouse, with a friend – whatever works for you!
Open your Bible to the reading found under today’s date. Take time reading and allow God to speak to you, don’t rush. Look for ONE verse that particularly stands out, and write it out.
What do you think God is saying to you in this Scripture? Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal Jesus to you. In your own words, record the context of the passage.
Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Write how God is showing you this Scripture can apply to you today. How will you be different today because of what you have just read?
Don’t be worried about getting the words right, just get your heart right! Be sure to listen to what God has to say!
When looking for a Bible, look at any large book retailer for one in a version you’re comfortable reading. Popular versions include the NIV, NRSV, NASB, or ESV. You can also ask a staff member at church for a free Bible!
